Resilient Through the Holidays: Tips for Fitness Instructors

The holiday season is upon us, and while your class sizes may be fluctuating, your schedule is likely packed!

As a fitness instructor, your schedule is probably filled with end of year celebrations at the studio(s) where you teach, filling in as a last-minute sub as other instructors go on vacation or catch that dreaded cold that’s going around, and juggling clients trying to squeeze in sessions before their holiday travels. Combine that with personal holiday commitments, reconnecting with old friends, and maybe hosting family…it’s easy to feel overwhelmed.

Staying grounded during this busy season is essential—not just for your own well-being, but also so you can show up fully for your students and clients. Here are some tips to help you stay resilient, centered, and energized through the holidays.

1. Reflect on your growth this year.

Before the hustle of the holidays takes over, take a moment to pause and reflect on how far you’ve come this past year. Think about the challenges you’ve faced, the milestones you’ve achieved, and the moments when you’ve made an impact in your classes.

Ask yourself:

Reflection can also bring to mind what you’re thankful for and gratitude can be a game-changer when the holidays start to feel overwhelming. Jot down a few things you’re thankful for—like a client’s sense of humor, a supportive coworker, or simply the joy of teaching.

You can uplift others during this stressful season by sharing your gratitude. Dedicate a few moments at the start or end of your classes to reflect on how thankful you are for the community you’ve built within your classes.

Whether you cozy up with your journal and write out your accomplishments of the past year, share highlights with your instructor bestie over coffee, or take a moment of quiet solo reflection, this is a small but powerful way to gain perspective, acknowledge your progress, and step into the new year with clarity and purpose.

2. Set boundaries with your energy and time.

Your time is precious, especially during the holidays. Give yourself permission to say “no” to commitments that don’t align with your priorities. Whether it’s skipping a social event to recharge or limiting how many extra classes you sub, setting boundaries will protect your peace and help you avoid burnout.

And if you’re saying “yes” to additional classes for financial reasons, balance it out by scheduling downtime afterward.

3. Don’t forget the gift of presence.

Amid the chaos of the season, don’t forget to take moments for yourself. Go for a walk, read a book, practice meditation, or simply take a few deep breaths between classes. These pauses are like gifts to yourself that can help you reset and refocus, even on your busiest days.

Speaking of gifts, although I completely understand the desire to show your clients and fellow instructors how much you appreciate them, holiday expenses can pile up quickly. And if you teach large group fitness classes, you may be wondering how you can make each person feel special, without going over budget. Instead of purchasing gifts, consider thoughtful, personalized gestures that don’t break the bank—like handwritten notes that highlight your clients’ progress or gifting the studio with a basket of energy bars or baked goodies so instructors can refuel between classes.

4. Take time off and prioritize rest.

If your schedule allows, consider taking a few days off to reset and recharge before the new year. Rest is not just about sleeping; it’s about giving yourself space to enjoy hobbies, spend time with loved ones, and reconnect with what brings you joy outside of teaching.

Engaging in activities you love—whether it’s painting, hiking, or simply curling up with a good book—can rejuvenate your mind and body, allowing you to step back into the studio with renewed energy. The more rested and fulfilled you feel, the more you’ll have to give to your students in the new year.

Wrapping Up the Year

The holiday season is a chance to celebrate your progress, cherish meaningful connections, and prioritize your well-being. By taking time to reflect, recharge, and set boundaries, you’re not only caring for yourself—you’re modeling resilience and balance for your students and clients.

This time of year is full of reminders of what makes our role as fitness instructors so meaningful. That Pilates class is not just a workout, it’s a moment’s respite from the in-laws that are in town, that HIIT class is giving last-minute shoppers the energy boost they need to make a dash through the mall, that spin class is the gift of “me time” on everyone’s list, and that yoga class is what allows grandma to easily get down on the floor to play with the grandkids. Your classes not only provide a space for connection and place to celebrate one another, they help people live their lives to the fullest.

As you close out this year, remember: your impact as a fitness instructor goes far beyond the studio. The energy, kindness, and passion you bring to your classes make a difference in the lives of others, even when you don’t realize it. So even if the numbers dwindle, know that everyone can’t wait to get back after the holiday season settles.

Let this season be about finding joy in the small moments, giving yourself grace, and stepping into the new year with clarity and purpose. Cheers to a season of resilience and making a difference one class at a time!
